ABE's Hydrology Department provides technical expertise; planning and design services for civil engineering projects that involve detailed study of hydrologic and hydraulic effects.

Hydrology is the study of "the occurrence, circulation, and distribution of the waters of the Earth." In practice, hydrologic studies involve determining the stormwater runoff from an area because of a rain event.

Runoff predictions depend upon many complex parameters, including the amount of paved surfaces, soil type, and moisture conditions of the soil, ground slope, and the spatial variation of rainfall. Using a variety of calculation methods and computer model simulations such as the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and programs by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), we are able to predict runoff for storm conditions.

Combined with hydraulic analysis of specific flow situations, we provide our clients with complete services in a variety of areas to meet their needs, including:

• Floodplain analysis to comply with Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) regulations for appropriate and responsible develop within existing floodplains

ABE's structural engineering staff is experienced with the design of a variety of highway bridges and a wide range of facilities for public works and industrial projects.

These include new construction, as well as modifications and additions to existing structures.

Public works designs have included multi-million gallon tanks above and below grade, galleries pump stations, drain enclosures, sewers and junction chambers, elevated tanks and earth retention facilities from sea walls to systems using mechanically stabilized embankments.

Many communities are finding that informed decisions relating to sewer improvements require an accurate assessment of the existing flow characteristics of a sewer system.

We have designed municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants of all sizes-from small septic tank installations to major facilities such as the 850 MGD secondary plant serving the City of Detroit and many other Michigan communities.

We recognize that each wastewater plant has its own unique set of operational challenges and that the analyses, design, and operation of each wastewater treatment plant require a different approach. An important first step in any project is the evaluation of existing facilities by experienced staff.

Depending on client needs, this evaluation can be either a relatively simple walk through, interview, and review of O&M records or a much more in-depth analysis. We offer consulting services on all aspects of wastewater treatment including analysis of private firm proposals to operate and maintain treatment facilities or the disposal of biosolids.
